Liposuction
Liposuction is an excellent way to reshape and remodel parts of the body where skin excess is not a problem but unpleasing contours are present due to uneven distribution of body fat. Commonly treated areas include the inner aspect of the knee and upper thigh, the outer aspect of the upper thigh, the hips and the tummy.
In liposuction treatment, tiny incisions are made, which mean that long-term scarring is not an issue. Special cannulas are used to aspirate/remove fat from the body to achieve the desired improvement in shape.
Infection, bleeding and general complications may complicate liposuction just as with other procedures. It is normal to develop a lot of bruising and swelling following surgery but this typically settles over the first 4-6 weeks. The skin over the treatment area may become relatively numb, due to damage of minor nerve branches; this recovers with time.
It is typical for areas that have been treated by liposuction to feel rather lumpy and irregular and in most patients these differences will settle with time and healing. Secondary surgery is sometimes helpful to patients who have persistent issues with the contour of the treated areas and can always be discussed in the outpatient clinic.
Aftercare
Most patients undergoing liposuction will spend one night in hospital. According to the area that is being treated, special liposuction garments are worn for a period of 4-6 weeks after surgery. I advise patients to take Arnica for bruising and swelling to settle and I also recommend massaging treated areas, using a simple cream such as E45 or Nivea or a preferred body moisturiser.
